My name is Samuel Shockley and I’m an Injured/disabled veteran. I lost both legs from an IED explosion in Afghanistan in 2013. I was invited by the Send-A-Vet foundation to go on a fishing trip to Kenai, Alaska, where I had one of the most amazing experiences of happiness and success in my life. The trip was adapted to my needs from beginning to end. They assigned an escort (Ron Kline) who picked me up at my home and assisted me throughout the week I stayed up there. The lodge was not ADA compliant but anytime I needed help, someone was there to carry me up the stairs or help me to get in and out of the boat. I caught my fair share of wild Alaska Salmon and a 7-pound rainbow trout as well. I ended up bringing home over 100 lbs of fish that I caught. The trip was adapted to my needs, and the guide/lodge owner Byron Rockstad was an amazing host and now a very good friend. As a matter of fact, I have made several new friends from the guys I met in Alaska and the Send-A-Vet group. They didn’t judge me but embraced my eagerness to catch more fish than everyone else. I can’t put into words how appreciative I am of the Send-A-Vet Foundation for giving me the memories and the opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors. PS THE BEST THERAPY IN LIFE.
Thank You to all involved!
