In Spring of 2018, I had the privilege of joining Send-A-Vet foundation on an Idaho Spring bear hunt. I learned of this hunt through a mutual friend who has experienced many great outings with Send-A-Vet. My Experience with Send-A-Vet was nothing more than top notch. Mark and the other volunteers worked tirelessly to help me and my fellow injured vets experience a fantastic hunt. Form the Quality of the baits, transportation and food and longed, nothing was left wanting. For me, being around such like-minded individuals was the maid the hunt even better. I love to hunt predators, especially bear. These guys loved chasing bear as much as I did, and did everything they could to ensure that my nagging limitations form old injuries were a non-issue on this hunt. Since my discharge from the army, few things have helped my own recovery and peace of mind like spending time in the woods. Spending that time with like-minded door kickers only futures the enjoyment.

After my great time with the Spring bear hunt of 2018, I was lucky enough to be invited out with Send-A-Vet for an Idaho Wolf trapping class. I had always been curious about pursuing wolves. The class offered by the Department of Idaho Fish and wildlife was fantastic. Not only did they take the time to explain how and why to use different sets, but they taught us how to make our own traps, as well as some of the best ways to outwit the top predatory the state. The class meant a lot to me, not just the knowledge gained, but the entire experience of learning a new method to enjoy the outdoors with many of the same, likeminded souls I was able to share my bear hunt with earlier in the year.

I had the opportunity to go on a bear hunt with send-a-vet and it gave me back something that I thought lost when I was medically discharged from the Army, the feeling of brotherhood. Harvesting my first bear was an amazing experience but the stories and laughs shared around the camp fire were the most memorable.

Thank you

This is a letter of testimony and I’m writing this to help anyone understand the value of the Send-A-Vet Foundation, the character of the people who are associated to this organization and a bit about my personal experience in Idaho.

I was invited to hunt a bear in Idaho by Send-A-Vet in 2016 and I was contacted by them early the next year to see if my hunt could be coordinated and fit in my schedule. I had just retired from the Army and had started my new job so I couldn’t go in 2017. Send-A-Vet called me again towards the end of 2017 and my new job conflicted with bear season once again. However, I had got to the point where I really needed to take a personal break and then some. I had essentially left a high-tempo job in my Army career of 20 years in Special Operations and went right in to another high-tempo job as a civilian. I needed to reset my mind and a big indicator was my stress levels began to increase significantly.

I eventually spent five days in Idaho with Send-A-Vet in the early summer of 2018. The time I spent there made a tremendous and positive impact on my life, my family’s perspective on quality time and also my new career. The two contributing factors that ensured such a great benefit to my family and I were the atmosphere in Idaho and the people of Send-A-Vet. I am completely convinced that my trip to Idaho manifested in more than a simple harvesting of one of mother nature’s most fascinating animals. My trip to Idaho became and will continue to be the example I can rely to remind me that life is short and a balanced path through it is the best way to go about it.

The people I met in Idaho were completely dedicated to making my experience beneficial, I saw it every day and it was genuine. I will forever be grateful to Send-A-Vet and I will never take the lesson I learned there for granted.

Send-A-Vet,

I want to take a moment and thank you for what you do and how you have helped me. I served in Afghanistan in 2013 where I was combat injured. I went through 3 back surgeries and 1 hand surgery. During my recovery on of my high school buddies (Mark Brasel) reached out to me about this group (Send-A-Vet) who helps wounded vets get out on some great outdoor trips. I contacted them and submitted my information and even attended their annual banquet which I might add was an awesome event to attend. This past spring you sponsored me on an all-expense paid Bear Hunt in Idaho. Not knowing what to expect going in I was very optimistic about the whole ordeal. I was picked up and drove all the way to Kooskie ID., which was a big step for me as it was the longest road trip I had been on since my last back surgery and I didn’t know how I would handle sitting that long. The staff and volunteers where very nice and hospitable to taking breaks and meeting all my needs. The other hunters and myself where put up in this beautiful cabin owned by the president of the club (Rick Sutter). He opened his home to us veterans to stay there for the duration of the hunting trip. All our meals and needs where met with the utmost care of the veterans.

The staff and volunteers catered to our needs and ensured that our disabilities where taken into consideration when determining where to place us for the best possible scenario. I have to say once I was taken to my hunting blind and left for the day to watch the side of the hill that it was the most at peace I had been in a long time. My mind filled with anticipation of seeing a bear in the wild that I had only seen in zoos let alone killing one. But I’m one who has been hunting and let down on several occasions but this was not the case. I successfully shot by first bear within the 2 hours I had been placed in that blind. I contacted the volunteers at the cabin and they came and retrieved my bear and proceeded back to the cabin to take care of the bear.  I spent the rest of my trip helping out fellow hunters and volunteers as they where all veterans from different branches of service. Not only was the trip successful but it was very rewarding.

This trip helped me relieve so much pain, stress, frustration, anger, and anxiety that I suffer from. Hanging out with fellow veterans gives me sense of belonging cause they understand what I’m going through cause they have been there to. There’s was no fighting or arguing between the branches of military. Just stories of good times and bad times with fellow veterans who can relate. I will continue to support Send-A-Vet in any way I can and give back what they have given me. I cannot explain in words how much this trip meant to me and my family, just know that you have helped another veteran get through some dark days and I have light at the end of the tunnel and it looks wonderful.

Thanks Send-A-Vet,
