I had the opportunity to go on a bear hunt with send-a-vet and it gave me back something that I thought lost when I was medically discharged from the Army, the feeling of brotherhood. Harvesting my first bear was an amazing experience but the stories and laughs shared around the camp fire were the most memorable.

Thank you

I am grateful for the opportunity that “Send-A-Vet” foundation gave me: it was a Bear hunt in northern Idaho. The camaraderie surpassed anything I had imagined. Last time I experienced this degree of fellowship, I was still Active duty, and this was one of the few times after I was medically retired I have felt at peace with myself and I actually was able to sleep without my prescription medication. I spent my days in the woods where the solitude helped me work through some things: it was better than any treatment or medication that the doctors have given me. At night, all the hunters would break bread around the fire as we talked about the wildlife we seen, told funny stories of our past experiences in the military and enjoyed each other’s company.

To me, those little moments were the best moments of the entire trip: the ability to bond and relate, and speak of how certain people deal with different medical issues or best way to go about navigating the VA system. I learned a lot, I saw every one there as someone I could trust, which is something I do not do or take easily.

Mark is a man of his word whom I respect a lot, I was invited twice to the Idaho adventure: the first time I did not harvest any game and Mark said to me that I would get a chance until I harvested a Bear. Mark kept his promise and on my second trip I harvested a beautiful black bear. Mark was as excited, if not more excited as I was. This day, I think that is the coolest thing I’ve done and talk about it all the time.

I’ve made friends to this day that I still stay in touch with, thanks to the Send-A-Vet foundation. I feel like that this has created a small community, as for Mark, even with his busy schedule and life he still finds time to call or text for the holidays. Mark and Ricky have created a very special organization in the Send-A-Vet foundation. It has been an amazing opportunity and honor to have been given the chance to be part of this experience.

Thank you.

In May of 2016 I was invited to go on a Lady veteran bear hunt that was sponsored by Hope for the Warriors and Send-A-Vet. The hunt was in Idaho, so I flew into Spokane, Wa where I was met by Ken Sutherby. Ken Was wonderful and welcoming, he and I drove together from Spokane to Kooskia where the bear hunt takes place. Once there he helped me and the other female vet, Soli, to sight in our rifles and he also gave us some extra tips and tricks that have really helped me since with my shooting. After sighting in the rifles, we went back to the cabin, I could have just spent the weekend at the cabin and been happy the location is amazing. That evening we discussed different locations for each of the hunters and then went to bed for the early morning. The next morning, we went to one of the bait barrel sights and I was set up on the ground and camouflaged, I had a view of the hill where the bears typically came down to the barrel. Once I was set everyone left and I got to settle in and wait. I figured I was going to be there for a while so I pulled out my kindle to read, not 20 minutes later I look up and see a bear wandering down. I thought he looked a little small so I was gonna let him do his thing and see if any larger bears came out. So he wandered off and a few minutes later another bear came around. I thought he looked larger and he was at the barrel where I knew I would have a shot. I didn’t have much of a window due to trees but I was able to see enough of him to line up a head shot. So, I took a breath and took the shot. He went down instantly. I was so excited, but nervous at the same time. So, I got up to walk over and make sure he was down for good. He was definitely larger in the scope but he was down, I had shot him right through his left eye. I knew that I wasn’t going to be getting picked up for a number of hours so I walked back to the cabin and got Mark and V who came with me to retrieve the bear. I spent the rest of the weekend relaxing and fishing with Ken. We had fires in the firepit and some great conversations and bonding time. It was an amazing experience, to spend that time away from everything but being able to bond with other vets. I want to go back and do it again, even if it isn’t to hunt, just to spend the weekend. I truly appreciate the opportunity I had to participate and hope that this program continues for many years.

This is a letter of testimony and I’m writing this to help anyone understand the value of the Send-A-Vet Foundation, the character of the people who are associated to this organization and a bit about my personal experience in Idaho.

I was invited to hunt a bear in Idaho by Send-A-Vet in 2016 and I was contacted by them early the next year to see if my hunt could be coordinated and fit in my schedule. I had just retired from the Army and had started my new job so I couldn’t go in 2017. Send-A-Vet called me again towards the end of 2017 and my new job conflicted with bear season once again. However, I had got to the point where I really needed to take a personal break and then some. I had essentially left a high-tempo job in my Army career of 20 years in Special Operations and went right in to another high-tempo job as a civilian. I needed to reset my mind and a big indicator was my stress levels began to increase significantly.

I eventually spent five days in Idaho with Send-A-Vet in the early summer of 2018. The time I spent there made a tremendous and positive impact on my life, my family’s perspective on quality time and also my new career. The two contributing factors that ensured such a great benefit to my family and I were the atmosphere in Idaho and the people of Send-A-Vet. I am completely convinced that my trip to Idaho manifested in more than a simple harvesting of one of mother nature’s most fascinating animals. My trip to Idaho became and will continue to be the example I can rely to remind me that life is short and a balanced path through it is the best way to go about it.

The people I met in Idaho were completely dedicated to making my experience beneficial, I saw it every day and it was genuine. I will forever be grateful to Send-A-Vet and I will never take the lesson I learned there for granted.
